Build Trails, Not Pits – Let’s Preserve RDU Forest!

For years, families and people of all ages have biked and hiked on a tract of airport land that straddles Umstead State Park and Lake Crabtree County Park. Unfortunately, plans to build a rock quarry – a giant pit – are in motion and threaten to destroy this important green space and recreation area. Join us as we fight to preserve these trails for our children and generations to come and make them a permanent part of Umstead Park!

Reasons to support RDU Forest:

  • These trails provide a huge public benefit. As the Raleigh-Durham area continues to grow, it is important that we develop responsibly and preserve one of the things that makes our community such a wonderful place to live – our outdoor recreations areas!
  • Building a pit next to Umstead State Park would be irresponsible, not only creating a huge eyesore next to a beautiful wooded park, but creating potential hazards for families and children.
  • Destruction of these wooded areas is irreversible and could cause irreparable environmental damage. Once a pit has been created with explosives, there’s no going back and re-growing trees.
  • Bike trails are an economically viable option. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t have to choose between economic prosperity and the environment. More recreation areas would be a boon to the local economy.
